Here, I’m going to tell you what you should roughly expect to pay to renovate your bathroom.
Remembering that these costs will vary from region to region and no bathroom, or bathroom reno company is the same. This is from my own experience running our building company based here in Tauranga.
First off let’s break down bathroom renovation costs in NZ into four categories;

Entry level bathroom renovation cost
Mid-range bathroom renovation cost
High end bathroom renovation cost
Entry Level Bathroom
DIY bathroom renovation cost-If you’re handy and wanting to save dollars, diy is a good option. If you leave everything in the same place, eg don’t move the vanity or toilet position / plumbing around; that can help you keep costs down more too. For a full DIY bathroom you should budget between $8,000-$20,000 depending on what you decide to do.
Entry Level Bathroom- An entry level bathroom is best suited if you’re on a low budget, perhaps a first home buyer, or rental property owner that wants to keep costs down. This price range could include:
Entry Level vanity, shower or shower over bath, and tapware.
Durable yet basic vinyl sheet flooring but not extra’s like tiled floors, heated flooring, or tiled splash backs.
New Lighting, upgraded plug points.
Heated Towel Rail
Mirror with mirror demister.
New entrance door and handle.
New Robe hooks, toilet roll holder, and hand towel hook.
A full entry level bathroom renovation in NZ you should budget between $20k-$28k+-
3. Mid-Range Bathroom Renovation Cost- A mid-range bathroom is best suited for your home, if you’re wanting a bathroom that’s a bit more luxurious to suit your home, a bathroom that will increase your property value and fit with the rest of your house, but not wanting to put in a new tiled shower.
Mid Range Bathroom Example
A mid-range bathroom could consist of:
Tiled flooring & tiled splash back.
Mid range quality vanity with option for a top mounted bowl (as pictures above).
Option for wall mounted taps.
Free standing bath
Frameless 1200mmx 900mm shower.
A large 1200X 900mm (optional) acrylic shower (as pictured left) or re-tiling an existing tiled shower
New Lighting, & upgraded plug points.
Heated Towel Rail

New entrance door and handle. Option for a cavity slider door if you’re limited on space.
New Robe hooks, toilet roll holder, and hand towel hook.
Floor to ceiling tiles could also be possible, depending on your bathroom selections.
For a full mid-range bathroom renovation in New Zealand you should allow between 30k-55k depending on how luxurious you want to go.
3. High-End Bathroom Renovation Cost- A high-end bathroom is best if you’re wanting to create an oasis to start your day in. Imagine a complete wet area, with a new tiled shower, free standing bath and all the mods and cons.
Luxury High End Bathroom Example
This range could include gorgeous features such as:
A double tiled shower
Luxurious Freestanding bath
Feature Lighting, headlamps. & upgraded plug points.
Heated Towel Rails
Floor to ceiling tiles
High quality double vanity & high quality wall mounted taps
Skylights to let more natural light in
Possibility for Indoor/outdoor flow onto your courtyard or outdoor shower.
Underfloor heating to keep your toes warm
and the list goes on. ..
This is most peoples dream bathroom range, the same bathroom you see in magazines, a bathroom you’ll walk into and feel the warmth of the heated floor on your feet, and look over to your large free standing bath that you can end your day in with a glass of wine in hand looking out your large bi-folding doors opening onto your backyard. A double shower that you can shower with your partner in, without fighting over who gets the hot water. For a high end bathroom & or new tiled shower, depending on exactly what you choose and how luxurious you’d like to go, you should budget anywhere between 55k-100k+.
